VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Marymount University men's basketball team played its season opener on Saturday afternoon, falling to Virginia Wesleyan University, 89-57, on the road.

Marymount was paced by seniors Zamir Clifton and Xavier Reaves, both scoring in double-figures. Clifton paced the team with 15, while Reaves added 10.

Sophomore Montell Cooper chipped in with seven points and team-highs with five assists and three steals. Senior Roey Stern and sophomore Wyatt Hockenberry added seven points, apiece, as well.

Virginia Wesleyan took control early with a 10-3 run to open the game, but Hockenberry drove for a layup to begin a 16-12 edge for the Saints over the next 7:14. Hockenberry, Clifton, and Reaves tallied four points, each, over the span, cutting Marymount's deficit to just three, 22-19.

The Marlins answered with nine-straight points to rebuild their lead, and they outscored the Saints 21-14 through the remainder of the first half to take a 43-33 advantage into halftime.

The 10-point halftime difference was the closest the Saints would get the rest of the way, as Virginia Wesleyan continued to grow its lead through the second half on the way to the victory.

Marymount will travel to Rowan University for its next game on Wednesday, November 17. The opening tip is set for 6 p.m.
