Box Score SCRANTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's soccer team opened Atlantic East Conference play with a 2-1 road victory over Marywood University on Saturday.
Marymount put the offensive pressure on early, as freshman Evan Vargas put a shot on goal just over a minute in, but his attempt was saved.
Marywood struck first in the 13th minute, taking advantage of a free-kick opportunity.
The Pacers would hold the one-goal lead through the remainder of the first half. The Saints had one more opportunity to score in the opening frame, but freshman Leonardo Torres' shot was denied.
At halftime, Marywood held a slight edge in shots, 4-2, and a 3-0 lead in corner kicks.
It didn't take long for Torres to tie the score in the second half. Sophomore Reece Ventura took the ball into the box and sent a pass from right to left for Torres to tap in from in front of the net. The score marked his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Marymount continued to attack through the second half, totaling nine shots in the period, including six on goal.
The offensive persistence was again rewarded in the 81st minute, as sophomore Manny Gaunaurd ripped a shot from the right side and beat the keeper to take a 2-1 lead.
The goal was all the Saints needed to take the win, as senior Ronald Clark secured the victory with a final save in the final minute.
Clark earned the win in goal, playing in the second half and making two saves while allowing no goals. Sophomore Brian Cruz started the game in net, tallying one save.
The Saints will next be in action for their conference home opener on Wednesday, October 13 against Gwynedd Mercy University at Long Bridge Park. The game is set for 7 p.m.
