Marymount University Women's Volleyball Team falls to Christopher Newport in the fifth set

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Marymount University women's volleyball team fought hard against Christopher Newport University but fell, 3-2, in the final match of the regular season on Saturday.

The Captains started the first set in the lead scoring the first three points but were unable to maintain their lead as an attack error by the Captains gave Marymount its first point. The Saints capitalized on the Captains errors as juniors Kaitlyn Doyle and Sophie Meredith both tallied multiple kills to put Marymount in the lead. Christopher Newport was able to take back the set near the end and win, 25-21.

The Saints took control from the beginning in the second set registering at least two points for every one of Christopher Newport's through the opening points. While the Captains mounted a series of kills in the middle, they were unable to catch the Saints lead until the score reached 21-21. The Captains continued their attack but with the Saints only trailing by one when the Captains hit 25, play continued. A block by Doyle and a block by sophomore Myia Jeter gave the set to the Saints.

The third set attacks were spread more evenly between the two teams, each countering the other's point. After the Captains scored seven points almost uninterrupted, the Saints countered with their own seven points. With the score tied 17-17, the Captains took control, building a lead that they didn't let go of, giving Christopher Newport the set 25-21.

The fourth set scoring pattern was similar to the third with the score tying at 18 but the Saints taking control and winning the set 25-19. Marymount sophomore Sydney Sands scored two of the final three points with kills.

The fifth set stayed close and was a tough battle, with the Captains taking control near the end and winning the set 15-11.

Doyle led the Saints in kills with 16 followed by Sands with 11. Elissa Munsterman led in digs with 18. Doyle led in blocks with three followed by Jeter with two. The Saints led the Captains in attack percentage with an average of .158 to Christopher Newport's .130.

The Saints return to the court in the Atlantic East Tournament starting on Tuesday November 2, playing host to Centenary University. The game time is to be determined.
