Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University battled to a hard-fought 1-1 double-overtime draw against Neumann University on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park.
The Saints were dominant on the ball against their Atlantic East Conference foe, which resulted in a 27-13 advantage in shots. MU was unable to capitalize on its heavy-handed offensive approach, as the Knights dug in defensively and leaned on goalkeeper Seth Walker, who finished the contest with 13 saves.
Despite Marymount's 14-edge in shots in the second half, it was Neumann that got on the board first. Marlon Trejo scored for the visitors from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.
Marymount did not let the momentum shift to the other end of the park, however, as Axel Gonzalez answered just 55 seconds later. Nicholas Vigo served an out-swinging ball into the box form the right side off of a free kick chance. Neumann's netminder charged out of goal but missed the clear attempt, which allowed the ball to find Gonzalez near the back post. The sophomore headed the ball home into the wide open net to knot the score at 1-1.
The Saints pushed for the game-winner as regulation wound down with five attempts on target. Walker managed to keep MU off the board, however, which sent the game into overtime.
Kevin Cassinera had MU's best chances in both overtime periods, but his attempts in in the 104th and 112th minutes were both turned away to keep the score at 1-1 as the final whistle blew.
Brian Cruz got the starting nod in goal and played the full 120:00. The sophomore tallied six saves to keep the Knights at bay. For Gonzalez, the goal marked the second of his career, while Vigo's assist went down as his fifth of the campaign.
Marymount returns to the pitch on Monday, October 25, when it hosts Gallaudet University on Class of 2022 Recognition Night at Long Bridge Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
