Box Score GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. -- The Marymount University women's soccer team bounced back in a big way on Wednesday evening with a 3-0 win over Gwynedd Mercy University in Atlantic East Conference action.
The Saints took control of the contest with a 14-1 edge in shots. The Griffins lone attempt did find its way on target, but freshman goalkeeper, Grace Needham, turned the attempt away. MU was unable to beat Gwynedd Mercy's Molly Fleming over the first 45 minutes, however, as the game went into the halftime break knotted at 0-0.
Marymount continued its offensive barrage to open the second frame with three shots in the first five minutes of the half. The pressure paid off in the 51st minute, as freshman Allina Mbuko netted the first goal of the game. The rookie raced past the Griffins' defense and poked the ball past an onrushing Fleming for her first career goal.
Junior Emely Obregon doubled MU's lead a little over two minutes later as the Saints continued to pummel the Griffins. Obregon mimicked Mbuko's effort with a run in past the defense for the marker.
Marymount's high-pressure approach continued to pay off early in the half as the Saints earned a penalty-kick opportunity. Obregon stepped up to the spot and buried the attempt to give the game its final score line.
Needham played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Saints and tallied three saves.
MU returns to Long Bridge Park field on Saturday, October 16,. to continue Atlantic East Conference play against Immaculata University at 1:00 p.m.
