Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Marymount University women's volleyball team picked up its second win of the season over the Cardinals of Catholic University on Monday evening with a thrilling 3-2 victory in the nation's capital.
After the Cardinals stole the first set, Marymount roared back and took the next two sets, 25-20, and 25-18. The second frame saw the Saints jump out to an 11-point lead after a kill from Myia Jeter made it 18-7. The Cardinals didn't go quietly, however, and eventually pulled back within three at 23-20. Despite the late push, MU used a kill from Caylee Shelton to close out the frame.
The third set featured more back-and-forth, as the Saints utilized an 8-0 run, capped by a kill from Elissa Munsterman, to take a 17-11 lead. While Catholic pulled back within three later in the set, Marymount cruised to the win behind the service of Jada Griffith.
Catholic refused to go quietly on its home court and took the fourth set, 25-15. The Blue and White came out firing to open the fifth set and swung the momentum firmly back onto their side of the court with a 6-3 lead. Catholic battled back and eventually knotted the score at 12-12. A kill from Maya Harris halted Catholic's charge and a miscue from the Cardinals gave the Saints a match-point opportunity. Kaitlyn Doyle brought the match to a close with a kill two points later at 15-13.
Munsterman lifted the Saints to victory on Monday with a season-high 18 kills. The junior added eight digs, two blocks, and two service aces. Doyle added eight kills, while Harris finished with seven. Sydney Sands tallied 37 assists, her fifth performance with 30 or more assists this season. On the defensive side of the ball, Sarah Pham totaled 19 digs.
Marymount returns to Atlantic East Conference action on Wednesday, October 13, when the Saints travel to battle Immaculata University at 7:00 p.m.
