Big first half leads men's basketball past Neumann in conference play

ASTON, Pa. – The Marymount University men's basketball team earned its sixth Atlantic East Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Neumann University, 97-67, posting the highest point total of the season.

The Saints got out to a fast start, beginning the game on a 14-0 run. Junior Steve Etienne scored a layup on the team's first possession, before seniors Josh Giardina and Taiga Walker knocked down back-to-back three-pointers on the following possessions, for an 8-0 lead.

Etienne netted two more buckets in the opening stretch, as the Saints looked to put the game away early.

Freshman Nick Rivas came off the bench for eight-straight points, including two threes, pushing the lead to 22-7, and Marymount continued to pull away through the rest of the half.

Walker hit another long-range shot to grow the lead past 20 points, 44-22, with 4:30 to play in the half.

In the final two minutes of the half, senior LaDarius McCord got the hot hand, with seven points, starting his spurt with a three. Sophomore Xavier Reaves added a layup, as the Saints scored the final nine points of the half to take a 55-27 lead into the break.

At halftime, Etienne paced the Saints with 10 points, while Walker, Rivas, and Reaves, all, chipped in with eight. Reaves led the rebounding with five, while McCord added seven points and three steals.

Marymount continued to keep control of the game in the second half, pushing its advantage to as many as 35 points midway through the half, 76-41, after a three-point play by freshman Jared Perry; he converted the free-throw following a layup through contact.

Freshman Tre Dunn and junior R.J. Brown, each, scored six points to lead the team in the second half. Brown hit from three twice, while Dunn, also, went two-for-two from the field and added two free throws.

In all, the Saints saw 15 players score in the game, led by 12, each, from Walker and Reaves; Reaves, also, led the team with eight rebounds. Etienne (10) and Rivas (11) also scored in double-digits, while Etienne led with three blocks.

Marymount will return home on Wednesday, February 12 to host Gwynedd Mercy University in Atlantic East Conference play at the Converse Family Fieldhouse; the contest is set for 8 p.m.
