Women's Basketball Continues To Roll In Atlantic East, Complete Season Sweep Of Knights

Box Score

ASTON, Pa. - The Marymount University women's basketball team kept its momentum rolling on Saturday afternoon, completing a season sweep of Neumann University, 91-48, to move to 8-1 in the Atlantic East Conference.

The Saints (18-4) never trailed in the game, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead off layups by senior Gabriella Haddad and sophomore Katie McShea. Through the first quarter, Marymount's intense defense held the Knights to just two field goals while turning the ball over eight times, to carry a 19-4 advantage into the second period.

Although Neumann started to find a little offensive flow in the second, the Saints still put up 22 more points to the Knights' 14 to take a 23-point lead to the locker room. Of the 14 points by Neumann, six were at the free-throw line.

Marymount shot 16-for-30 in the first half, led by Haddad and McShea with a combined 23 points of the 41. Freshman Lauren Cunningham posted a perfect first half with seven points on 3-for-3 from the field including a three-pointer, while pulling in four rebounds. Haddad and McShea led the first-half rebound game with six apiece.

Coming out of the break, the Saints kept the hot hand with 25 more points on 60-percent shooting. Marymount opened the third quarter the same way they opened the game with back-to-back layups by McShea and Haddad. As the scoring progressed, two-straight layups by junior Kathryn Ryan and two free throws by freshman Lauryn Caiafa pushed the MU advantage to 30-plus with 6:02 remaining in the period, 51-20.

As they made their way into the final quarter, the Saints eventually built up to their first 40-point lead of the game following four-consecutive layups, all by different players. Freshman Symantha Shackelford opened it up before Cunningham, junior Taylor Love and Ryan followed to push MU to a 78-37 advantage with 7:19 left in regulation.

With their third-straight quarter of 20-plus points to round out the game, the Saints knocked down nine field goals on another 60-percent shooting performance for 25 points. The last touch was put in by freshman Claire Smith to match the highest-point total of the season for the Saints with 91, the other time being against Neumann the first time around.

With all Saints seeing time in the game, 10 of them found the bottom of the basket led by McShea and Haddad's double-double outings. McShea finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Haddad knocked in 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Shackelford, Ryan and Cunningham each had double-digit games in scoring, with Shackelford registering 12 points and Ryan and Cunningham chipping in for 10 each.

The Saints return home for another league matchup with Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday, February 12. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., in the Converse Family Fieldhouse.
