Saints Battle Past Mighty Macs For 10th Win of Season

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Marymount University men's basketball team earned its 10th win of the season and improved to 3-2 in Atlantic East Conference play with an 84-73 victory on Wednesday night over Immaculata University in the Converse Family Fieldhouse. 

The teams traded shots through the early minutes of the game, but a 9-2 run opened up a 19-12 lead for the Saints. Sophomore Xavier Reaves converted a layup through a foul, before hitting the free throw on the three-point play, to spark the run.

Reaves, also, capped the spurt with a layup, but the Mighty Macs, quickly, tied the score, 19-19.

The remainder of the first half was close, but Marymount led for the majority of the period.

Immaculata grabbed a 26-25 lead with 6:50 to go in the half, but senior Taiga Walker answered with a layup on the next Saints' possession. Freshman Nick Rivas followed with a three, before junior Steve Etienne hit back-to-back layups to push the lead to 34-29.

Senior LaDarius McCord continue to keep the Saints ahead with two layups, and Reaves added a three, as Marymount took a 43-35 edge into the half.

At the break, Reaves led the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds, recording the double-double in the first 20 minutes of play. As a team, the Saints were shooting 51.4 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Mighty Macs, 23-16.

The Mighty Macs fought back to tie the score, 46-46, less than five minutes into the second half, but McCord knocked down a three to answer for the Saints.

Rivas stayed hot from the floor, hitting a jumper and a three for five-straight points, as Marymount pushed its lead to 58-53.

The Saints got ahead by as much as seven in the start of the half, as the Mighty Macs continued to keep it close, but Marymount began to pull away in the final five minutes.

Layups from Etienne and Rivas put the Saints up by eight, 71-63. After a free throw by McCord, he converted a layup to bring the lead to double-digits, 74-64.

McCord added another three and four foul shots down the stretch to secure the win for the Saints. He finished with 15 points in the half and a team-high 21 for the game.

Rivas and Etienne, each, finished with 16, while Reaves tallied his 17, to go with 15 rebounds. He also added three blocks and two steals, and McCord led with six assists. 

The Saints round out the first half of league play on Saturday, January 25, traveling up to Scranton, Pennsylvania for a matchup with Marywood University. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
