Saints Open 'Sets For Vets' Tournament With Hard-Fought Victory Over Diplomats

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Marymount University women's volleyball team collected its second-straight win on Friday night in its home opener and first day of the Marymount Sets For Vets Tournament, topping Franklin & Marshall College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23).

Junior Mykael Johnson led the offense in a tight matchup with a match-high 16 kills on a steady .306 hitting percentage, while notching her fourth double-double of the season with a team-high 13 digs.

She was a big part of the success in the first set, where she helped on five-straight serves to get the Saints in the lead after trailing early. An 11-3 run by MU but it up 11-8, a lead that wouldn't falter the rest of the set, taking a 25-19 decision.

The next two sets played much tighter with a total of 12 ties and eight lead changes, but in both, the Saints remained composed and battled down the stretch for a 25-22 win in the second and 25-23 in the third.

In the third set, Marymount showed the most composure late after giving up a four-point advantage at 23-19 when the Diplomats answered with four-straight points to draw it even and send MU into a timeout.

Coming out of the break in a loud Saint-filled gym, the Diplomats gave Marymount back the lead with a service error. But, the crowd erupted when the final point was laid down on a block assist by junior Myah Cordrey and freshman Elissa Munsterman to seal up the match with a 25-23 third set.

Junior Michaella Ulses also had a consistent hitting night with seven kills on a team-high .583 hitting percentage. The offensive was spread out by a match-high 24 assists by junior Maggie Viniard, while senior Theresa Buscemi was one shy of Johnson's dig count with 12. Cordrey had a four-block night to go with two service aces and three kills.

The Sets For Vets Tournament continues on Saturday, as the Saints take on Emory & Henry College at 10 a.m., in the Converse Family Fieldhouse.
