Saints clinch No. 3 seed in Atlantic East tournament with 88-69 win over Cavaliers

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's basketball team closed out its regular season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Cabrini University, 88-69, at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.

The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, but the Saints answered in convincing fashion, as two layups from freshman Xavier Reaves, followed by a fast-break dunk by sophomore Steve Etienne off a steal regained the lead for Marymount.

Cabrini retook a 12-11 lead, but Marymount gained control with a 14-0 run.

Junior Josh Giardina and Reaves drained back-to-back three pointers, before Giardina grabbed a steal on the following possession and fed Reaves for the fast-break jam to spark the Saints.

Etienne capped the spurt with two layups, and the Saints were able to hold their advantage from there to take a 36-28 edge into halftime.

Reaves and Etienne both hit double-digits in the first half with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

In the second half, the Saints heated up to shoot 69.2 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from three to put the game away.

Junior LaDarius McCord scored a layup to push the lead to 11, 43-32, and senior Brandon Rogers converted from long range to help grow the advantage to 52-37 just a few minutes later.

Marymount would not look back from there, on the way to a resounding win.

Four Saints hit double-figures in the game, as Reaves led with 19 points; he came up just one rebound short of a double-double to lead the team with nine. Etienne and McCord chipped in with 17 and 15 points, respectively, while Etienne notched four steals.

Before the game, the Saints celebrated Senior Day to honor Rogers and Logan Cook.

The Saints will now move into the Atlantic East Conference tournament on Monday, February 18. Marymount earned the third seed in the tournament and will host a first-round game against No. 6 Immaculata University at the Converse Family Fieldhouse; the game is set for 7 p.m.
