DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 14 Marymount University women's basketball team returned to the court, after a week off, in the Daytona Beach Shootout, falling to Centre College, 58-53, on Thursday evening.

Sophomore Katie McShea converted two free throws to give the Saints the first points of the game. She finished with eight points in a close first quarter, scoring the final six Marymount points in the period for an 11-9 lead.

A layup from junior Aidan Phillips got the Saints going for a 9-4 spurt to open the second quarter. Graduate student Abby Fisher, senior Gabriella Haddad, and freshman Symantha Shackelford, all, hit layups in the run, giving the Saints a seven-point lead, 20-13, with 3:32 to play before halftime.

McShea added two more scores in the final minutes of the first half to help keep Marymount in the lead, as she led the team with 13 points in the half.

The Saints took a 27-23 lead into the break, while shooting 50 percent from the field, as a team. They held Centre to 36 percent from the floor, including 11.1 percent from three.

Shackelford hit a three-pointer, before scoring a layup, to help the Saints regain an eight-point lead early in the second half, 34-26.

The Colonels responded with a 12-3 run to take the lead, 38-37, but the teams would trade leads for the final four minutes of the third quarter.

A pair for free throws from Shackelford and a free throw from junior Ananda Claggett gave Marymount a 44-42 edge going into the final quarter.

Junior Taylor Love hit a jumper, before Claggett converted a layup to push the lead to 48-44 with 6:07 to go.

However, Centre closed the contest on a 14-5 run to regain the lead and take the win.

McShea finished the game with 16 points to lead the team, while Shackelford tallied 13. Haddad pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Marymount will continue the Daytona Beach Shootout on Saturday, December 21 against Lynchburg College; the game is set for 4 p.m.
