CONFERENCE CHAMPS: Women's volleyball wins second-straight Atlantic East title with sweep of Knights

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University women's volleyball team captured its second-straight Atlantic East Conference championship on Saturday afternoon, topping Neumann University, 3-0, in the Converse Family Fieldhouse.

The Saints finished off a perfect season in conference play, going 6-0 in the regular season, en route to the Atlantic East title. They have now won the first-two Atlantic East championships since the league's beginning in 2018.

Juniors Maggie Viniard and Myah Cordrey led the way for the team. Viniard was named the Atlantic East tournament Most Valuable Player for her performance; she notched a double-double with 30 assists and 13 digs, while adding two kills and two blocks.

Cordrey led the team with 13 kills, with a .435 hitting percentage, and three blocks.

Marymount took early control in each of the first-two sets, riding the early momentum to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Opening the first set on a 7-1 run, Cordrey put down two kills, and the Saints stayed in control.

A kill from junior Michaella Ulses pushed the lead to 10 points at 20-10, before two-more kills from Cordrey closed the set, 25-16.

Viniard and Cordrey began the second set with a block, which Cordrey followed with two kills, as the Saints open with a 6-0 lead.

The Knights fought back to tie the score, 8-8, but Viniard tallied a kill to begin a 9-1 run for Marymount. Junior Mykael Johnson led with two service aces, before Ulses got up for a solo block to cap the spurt and give Marymount a 17-9 lead.

The Saints did not look back, taking a 25-14 win, ended by a kill from Johnson.

Neumann battle the Saints throughout the third set, not letting Marymount take more than a one-point lead in the early moments, and, eventually, grabbed its first lead of the match, 10-9.

The Knights continued to hold the lead to 19-16, but Cordrey put down a kill to start four-straight points for the Saints. Junior Jasmine Roy added a service ace in the run, while Johnson tallied a kill to retake the lead, 20-19.

Cordrey notched two kills in the final moments to keep the Saints ahead, before freshman Elissa Munsterman and Ulses captured the league title with a block.

Viniard's double-double led the team in assists and digs, while Johnson tallied 12 digs. The team finished with a .245 hitting percentage.

The Saints will now turn to the NCAA Division III Selection Show on Monday, November 11 at 12:30 p.m., for a potential Pool 'B' selection to the NCAA Division III tournament. Log on to www.marymountsaints.com for more information, as it becomes available.
