Men's soccer plays Immaculata to, 1-1, tie, but Mighty Macs advance past Saints, 5-4, in penalty shootout

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Marymount University men's soccer team traveled to Immaculata University on Tuesday night for an Atlantic East Conference tournament semifinal contest, as the Mighty Macs advanced past the Saints on a penalty-kick shootout, after the teams finished regulation and two overtimes in a, 1-1, tie.

Immaculata tested sophomore goalkeeper Ronald Clark just past the five-minute mark of the first half, but Clark was up to the challenge, keeping the game scoreless.

Clark made another save in the half, as the teams carried the scoreless tie into halftime.

Freshman Leonardo Luna had the Saints' lone shot-on-goal in the first half in the 41st minute, looking to break the tie late in the period, but Mikey Kalpokas was there for the stop.

The teams continued to battle for the game's first goal through the start of the second half, and it was Marymount that would strike first. Freshman Carlos Varona found classmate Justin Meza to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the 79th minute.

The Mighty Macs responded just over four minutes later to tie the score off a corner kick.

Each team put one-more shot on goal before the end of regulation, but both Clark and Kalpokas were there to make the stops and force overtime.

Freshman Derek Rivera and Luna both had opportunities on frame during the extra time, but were unable to capitalize. Immaculata couldn't find the goal either, as Clark made a save in the final minute of the second overtime to keep the score tied, 1-1.

The penalty shootout began with eight-straight makes, combined, between the two teams, with Luna, Meza, freshman Jesus Rios, and Clark converting for Marymount.

However, after a miss from each side, Immaculata's Alex D'Angelo beat Clark to the bottom left of the goal to give the Mighty Macs the edge. The Saints had one-more chance to tie the shootout, again, but could not convert.

The semifinal appearance marked the first for the men's soccer program since the 2003 season, when the Saints advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals.

Clark played all 110 minutes in goal for Marymount, making four saves in the game.

The Saints now turn to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship tournament selection on Monday, November 11 for a chance to continue their postseason. Log on to www.marymountsaints.com for more information, as it becomes available.
