PERFECTION: Women's Volleyball Goes Perfect In League Play To Earn Top Seed In Tournament

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University women's volleyball team completed a perfect regular-season Atlantic East Conference slate on Saturday afternoon, securing a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-16) sweep of Cabrini University to earn the top seed in the league tournament.

The victory solidified an untouched regular-season conference schedule, going 18-0 against its six opponents. It also extended the Saints' home win streak, now sitting at 25 matches, dating back to 2017.

Behind three double-double efforts in juniors Mykael Johnson and Maggie Viniard and sophomore Caylee Shelton, the Saints battled out two close sets and streamed through the third.

Although the first set never swayed away from Marymount's advantage, the Cavs remained close throughout, including getting within one at 22-21, forcing a Marymount timeout. However, the break proved useful, as the Saints came out on a 3-1 run to take the game, 25-22.

The second set played much different, with Cabrini controlling much of the set and Marymount remaining in striking distance. Trailing late, 21-18, the Saints hit a spark of life when Viniard found junior Michaella Ulses for a kill. The point ignited a 7-0 run ending on a Johnson kill for the 25-21 victory and a 2-0 lead in the set.

With a lot of momentum and energy, MU used a 10-2 stretch in the middle of the third set to take a commanding 15-9 advantage and never looked back, rolling to a 25-16 win and the sweep. In the third game, the Saints hit .484 for a match-high 16 kills and just one attack error.

Johnson led the way with 13 kills, while Shelton added 12. Each had double-doubles, with Shelton lying out for a team-high 15 digs and Johnson contributed 10. Viniard's double-double came on a match-high 40 assists and 11 digs. Viniard now has 11 double-doubles this season, while Johnson has nine.

Marymount is 20-10 overall for the season, its 13th season in program history with 20-plus wins.

The Saints round out the regular season next weekend with a trimatch at Bridgewater (Va.). They'll take on Eastern Mennoninite at 12 p.m., and follow with the host Eagles at 2 p.m.
