Early Connection From Freshmen Classmates Hoists Saints Over Knights

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's soccer team hosted Neumann University Wednesday evening at Long Bridge Park, securing its second-straight Atlantic East Conference victory, 2-1.

The Saints got off to a fast start, when just five minutes after the opening whistle freshman Carlos Varona played a ball over the Knights' back line for a sprinting classmate, Justin Meza. With a one-on-one opportunity, Meza placed his shot into the bottom left corner to take an early, 1-0, lead.

Following the Saints' goal, freshman goalkeeper Eduardo Cardonne made two leg saves, just minutes apart, to keep the Saints lead at one.

In the 21st minute, freshman Derek Rivera beat his mark down the left sideline to get a cross into the box. Junior Ridwaan Robinson was on the connecting end of the cross to bury the ball into the back of the net.

Neumann had a chance to tie the game right before the half, but Cardonne made a diving effort to keep the lead at 2-0.

At the break Cardonne had four saves, but the Knights had the edge in shots, 7-6.

To start the second half, Neumann played a ball through the Saints' defense that gave the Knights a one-on-one opportunity. Capitalizing on the chance, the Saints' lead was cut to one just seven minutes after the whistle.

Some rough play after the goal, from both sides, caused the remainder of the game to be played at 10-on-9 in favor of the Saints.

With the chance to tie the game, Tenzin Choedak was denied by sophomore goalkeeper Ronald Clark in the 65th minute with a diving save.

Cardonne was between the pipes for 52 minutes of play, facing five shots and making four saves. Clark was in net for the remainder of the game, saving all three shots that came his way.

Marymount looks to stay in the win column this Saturday, October 19, as they travel to conference-foe Marywood University; the opening touch is set for 1 p.m.
