Second-half surge not enough for Saints against Mighty Macs

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Marymount University men's basketball team went on the road on Wednesday evening at Immaculata University in Atlantic East Conference play, falling 74-66.

Junior Taiga Walker drained a three in the opening minutes, as Marymount grabbed a quick 4-0 lead.

Junior Ryan Albert and senior Brandon Rogers each added four points to help the Saints push their lead to 12-7.

The Mighty Macs responded with a 15-3 run over the next several minutes to gain a seven-point advantage with 4:02 to go in the first half.

Junior LaDarius McCord connected from long distance, before adding a two-point make, to cut into the deficit, as the Saints trailed 25-21 at halftime.

Albert led the way for the Saints with eight points in the first half, while McCord added six. As a team, the Saints out-rebounded the Might Macs, 20-13, in the frame.

Immaculata came out of the break hot, continuing to grow its lead until it stood at 19 points, 48-29.

However, the Saints began the chip away at their deficit. Albert got things started with a layup, and McCord tallied another three to get the score to 54-36. From there, Albert led an 11-0 run in favor of the Saints, notching another layup and a three-pointer, as Marymount got back to within seven, 54-47, with just over six minutes to play. Albert finished the game with 22 points to set a career high, including shooting 3-for-7 from behind the arc.

Continuing to cut the lead, junior Ibrahim Kamara would score a layup to get the score to 60-55, however, the Mighty Macs were able to hold on in the final minutes of the game for the win.

McCord finished with 22 points, tying with Albert for the game high, while Albert also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Walker dished out a career-high five assists, and sophomore Steve Etienne tallied three steals.

The Saints will return home to continue Atlantic East play on Saturday, January 12, as they will play host to Marywood University; the opening tip is set for 3 p.m.
