Saints Sweep Season Series With CNU on Rogers' Game-Winning Three

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A three-pointer by Marymount men's basketball junior Brandon Rogers with 6.5 seconds remaining gave the Saints a 68-66 road victory over Christopher Newport on Saturday at the Freeman Center.

The win also marked the first time that Marymount (7-14, 6-8 CAC) has swept the season series against the Captains since CNU joined the CAC prior to the 2013-14 season.

Trailing by one with 17 seconds remaining, the Saints called a timeout to setup the game-winning attempt. With ball at the top of the arc and less than five seconds remaining, Rogers made a couple of ball fakes to create some space before his defender fell down, allowing him to rise up to hit the game-winning three-pointer, his first basket of the game.

Marymount trailed by as many as eight, 50-42 with 16:24 remaining in the second half, but a 15-5 run over the next 4:10 gave the Saints their first lead, 57-52 with 12:14 to play.

Marymount took the lead, 54-52, on a three-pointer by sophomore Taiga Walker with 13:16 left before another three by sophomore Ryan Albert just over a minute later extended that advantage to five, 57-52.

However, Christopher Newport (16-5, 10-4 CAC) answered with a 10-2 spurt to go back in front by three, 62-59, with 8:47 remaining.

Neither team would score again until the 5:30 mark when sophomore Ibrahim Kamara hit two free throws before Walker gave the Saints the lead again, 63-62, on a layup with 4:10 left.

That would be the last field goal for either team as both combined to go 6-for-6 from the free throw line with the Captains going 4-for-4 to gve themselves a 66-65 lead with 17 seconds remaining and setting the stage for Rogers' heroics.

Kamara finished with a career-high 20 points, his second 20-point game this season. He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Albert added a career-high 18 points off the bench, going 8-for-12 from the floor.

Senior Dimitri Rucker was also in double figures, totaling 10 points to go along with five rebounds.

The Saints return home to face Wesley on Wednesday night at Verizon Sports Arena. Tipoff is at 8 p.m.
