Battle of conference leaders gives way to Captains over Saints

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For the first time this season, the Marymount women's basketball team dropped a Capital Athletic Conference contest, falling to Christopher Newport University, 70-52, in a battle of the top two teams in the league.

The Saints (18-3, 13-1 CAC) and Captains (19-2, 13-1) are now deadlocked at the top of the league with four games left in the regular season. They each hold a comfortable advantage over the rest of the conference, with a tie for third place currently between York College of Pennsylvania and Mary Washington at 10-4.

It remained tight through the first quarter with four lead changes, seeing the Saints get their first at 6-5 following a connection between senior Leah Hurst and freshman Kathryn Ryan. However, the back-and-forth swayed into the Captains favor for the final time with 1:51 left in the first quarter after two free throws by Micah Maloney for an 11-10 advantage.

Marymount would get as close as three points in the middle of the second quarter, but the Captains built up as big as a 19-point lead in the third.

Down the stretch, the Saints showed some life, getting within 10 with two minutes left in the game, but CNU held out for the decision.

Shooting 40.4 percent for the day, Marymount was paced by the current league leader in scoring, sophomore Regan Lohr, with 16 points. She is currently averaging 15.3 points per game. Senior Nicole Viscuso also put up a double-digit scoring day with 13 points, while adding a team-high eight rebounds.

Hurst, who still leads the league in steals and assists, posted game highs in both categories with six assists and five steals.

Off the bench, Ryan registered nine points of 4-for-6 shooting and added six rebounds.

Marymount will look to bounce back on Wednesday, February 7, returning home for a matchup against Wesley College. The game is labeled as the Saints' Play 4 Kay, as the team looks to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
