Saints drop close battle with Sea Gulls in overtime

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's basketball team took its third-straight game into overtime on Wednesday evening, this time falling to Salisbury University, 67-65, at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.

The Saints came out strong, taking a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest, with the help of a made jumper, followed by a long-range make, from junior Ryan Albert.

Salisbury fought back to eventually tie the score, 11-11, but Marymount again got on a run and pushed its lead to 26-17 with just over five minutes to play in the half.

Junior Josh Giardina scored seven points in the run, including a three-pointer to cap spurt, while senior Brandon Rogers added another score from behind the arc.

The Saints held their lead through the rest of the period, taking a 34-29 lead into halftime.

Rogers led the way with 8 points in the half, including two threes, while Giardina netted seven. Sophomore Steve Etienne led the way with six rebounds.

The Sea Gulls opened the second half on a 12-3 run to take a 41-37 lead through the first six minutes of the half.

However, the Saints kept the game close; freshman Kimani Benjamin broke out in the second half, hitting two-straight threes to keep Marymount within three, 46-43.

Giardina followed with another long-range make, continuing to close the gap, before freshman Xavier Reaves scored a layup to tie the score, 52-52.

Trailing 60-59 with less than a minute to play, junior Taiga Walker hit a free throw to force overtime.

However, the Sea Gulls took a quick lead in the extra period and were able to hold on for the victory.

Giardina and Rogers led the team on the night with 10 points, each, while Albert led with 10 rebounds.

The Saints will now begin a four-game road trip, first traveling to the University of Mary Washington on Saturday, December 8. The opening tip is set for 3 p.m.
