Reyes, McKee lead Saints past Gwynedd Mercy for first Atlantic East win

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University women's soccer team picked up its first Atlantic East Conference victory on Saturday at Long Bridge Park, downing Gwynedd Mercy University, 2-0.

Before the match, the Saints recognized the careers of the team's four seniors, Sydney Schultz, Sydney Sherman, Caroline Phillips, and Madison Grehawick for Senior Day.

The Marymount offense came out fast, putting pressure on the Griffins' defense. The Saints reeled off eight shots in the first 17 minutes of the contest.

Junior Karen Reyes had the best chance in the early moments, taking the ball to the top of the 18-yard box and ripping a shot on frame, forcing Gwynedd Mercy goalkeeper Kailey Hopkins to make the save.

Reyes would find the back of the net just before the half. She grabbed possession of the ball and jetted down the left side of the field; after cutting into the box, she ripped a shot at Hopkins. Despite the Griffins' keeper getting a hand on the ball, Reyes would not be denied and gave the Saints the 1-0 edge.

Along with the one-goal lead at the half, Marymount also outshot the Griffins, 12-2, and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Saints struck quickly in the second half, only needing eight minutes to find the net again. This time, Reyes found junior Jennifer McKee for the score. Reyes had the ball deep in Griffin territory to the right of the goal; she dropped a pass back to McKee in the middle of the box for a shot right over Hopkins' outstretched arms for the 2-0 lead. The score was the first of the season for McKee.

The Marymount defense, led by junior Courtney Stephens, sophomores, Sita Nair and Emma Buck, and freshman, Mia Londregan, continued to stifle the Griffins' offense to preserve the shutout through the remainder of the game, on the way to the win.

Both senior goalkeepers, Sherman and Schultz saw time in net. Sherman made the start, saving the only shot she faced, while Schultz recorded a save late in the contest to keep the clean sheet.

Marymount will now travel to Immaculata University for another Atlantic East showdown; the game is set for 6:30 p.m., on Wednesday, October 10.
