Box Score GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Marymount University men's soccer team picked up its first-ever Atlantic East Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, topping Gwynedd Mercy University, 2-1.
The Saints took control of the game early, scoring on two set pieces less than three minutes apart. In the 23rd minute, senior André Ferguson headed to the right side of the field for a corner kick for MU. Sending a ball into the middle of the 18-yard box, junior defender Rodney Ngoh leapt up in the mix of defenders to redirect the cross on a header finish to the top right corner of the net.
In the 25th minute, Ferguson set up for another corner kick on the right side. This time the cross went further than expected, dropping in past the back post where it met the foot of Ngoh on the end line. The one-touch redirect by Ngoh stayed low into the middle that was quickly touched into the right side of the net by senior Sebastian Hendi to put the Saints up 2-0, a score that carried into the half.
At the break, Marymount outshot the Griffins, 7-4, with six of its shots on target. They added six corners through the first 45 minutes.
The offensive pressure flipped sides in the second half, as Gwynedd Mercy put on five shots to the Saints' one through the final leg of regulation. Of those five shots, the Griffins found the back of the net in the 72nd minute off a touch in the back post by Shawn Wood.
However, that was the only time Marymount let one past the mitts of freshman goalkeeper Ronald Clark, as he pulled in two saves for the day to earn his first win in the net this season.
The Saints return home for a four-game stretch, opening on Wednesday, October 10 with Immaculata University for another Atlantic East matchup. Start time is set for 6 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
