NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Marymount University women's volleyball team traveled South for a battle againt No. 24 Christopher Newport University on Friday night, dropping a 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-23) decision. 

Although it was a slow start for the Saints (17-3), falling behind in the match after a 25-16 first set lose, they rallied back for a strong second game that had them leading late at 25-24. Needing just one point to even up the match, Marymount couldn't hold off the Captains (13-3) who rattled off the final three points to take the game in extra points, 27-25.

Set three was a back-and-forth battle once again, as neither team built up more than a three-point advantage. Down the stretch, a kill by senior Caroline Hanson drew the game even at 22-22, but two kills and a service ace by CNU held off the Saints for the 25-23 win.

The offense for Marymount performed at a good level, recording 42 kills, one mor than the Captain. Leading the way was Hanson with a match-high 15 while senior Emily Abramaitys and sophomore Mykael Johnson added nine and eight, respectively. Sophomore Maggie Viniard also posted a match high in assists, sending out 35 for the night, and junior Theresa Buscemi dove out for a match-high 16 digs. Senior Celine Nguyen and Viniard registed 10 more digs apiece, marking Viniard's seventh double-double of the season.

On the defensive end, the Captains flourished with 18 block assists and two block solos. 

The Saints will look to bounce back on Wednesday, October 10, as they head to St. Mary's College of Maryland for another non-conference matchup. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
