Box Score CRESSON, Pa. – A scoreless draw was the storyline for much of the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team's season-opener on the road at Mount Aloysius College on Saturday afternoon, but the silence was broken with less than five minutes remaining in the match off a free-kick finish by the Mounties.
A high offensive contest seeing a total of 32 shots, including 17 on target, also was quite a goalkeeper battle. Sophomore John Valcicak started up his second year as the Saint starting keeper with a new career high between the posts, turning away nine shots, while the opposing keeper James Eyre tallied seven saves.
However, the lone goal of the match went in with just under five minutes left, when the Mounties launched a roughly 40-yard free kick for the unassisted finish and the 1-0 decision.
Of the 14 shots taken by the Saints, seven were on target. Seven different players collected shot attempts led by junior transfer Sebastian Hendi with four and freshman Ridwaan Robinson with three.
The Saints will look to bounce back on Wednesday, September 6, as they host Randolph-Macon College at Long Bridge Park for their home opener. First touch is slated for 7 p.m.
