Freshman Trio Totals Career Highs in Loss at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. - Marymount women's volleyball freshmen Alexa Marcum and Myah Cordrey each totaled a career high in kills, but the Saints were hampered by 22 attack errors and seven reception errors as they fell at Randolph-Macon in a nonconference match Tuesday night at Crenshaw Gymnasium, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22.

Marymount (4-6) hit just .130 while the Yellow Jackets posted 13 total blocks and had a .274 hitting percentage.

Marcum totaled 10 kills and a .375 hitting percentage with just one error in 24 attempts while Cordrey had nine kills and hit .316 with only three errors in 19 swings. The two combined for 19 of the team's 36 kills and hit .349 compared to 17 kills and a minus-.015 hitting percentage for the rest of the team.

Freshman Jasmine Roy had a career-high 15 digs while freshman Maggie Viniard finished with 18 assists.  Senior Christy Tieman totaled 13 assists and four digs.

The Saints jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, but Randolph-Macon (10-3) used a 9-0 run to take a 10-4 lead and would never trail again. Four of the nine points came on Marymount errors.

The Saints used a 7-2 spurt to pull within one, 15-14, and managed to stay within striking distance at 19-17, but the Yellow Jackets closed the set by scoring six of the final nine points to win by five.

Randolph-Macon took an 11-3 lead to start the second set, but Marymount responded with an 11-4 run to pull within one again, 15-14, before the Yellow Jackets closed the set with 10 of the final 13 points to take the eight-point victory. Randolph-Macon totaled three service aces during the decisive run.

After Randolph-Macon took a 4-1 lead to begin the third set, Marymount scored the next four points to take a 5-4 lead. With the score tied at 8-8, an 8-1 run by the Saints gave them a 16-9 advantage and had them looking to force a fourth set. Freshmen totaled four kills during the spurt as Cordrey had two with Marcum and Ayanna Moore each adding one.

However, the Yellow Jackets used a 10-3 run to the set at 19-19. The sixth and final tie came at 20-20 before the home team scored five of thre final seven points to close out the match.

Marymount looks to snap its five-match losing streak tomorrow night when it travels across town to face Gallaudet at 7:00 p.m.
