Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team traveled down to No. 3 Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night, dropping a 72-52 decision in the Capital Athletic Conference matchup.
The first half of play saw the Captains build up a double-digit lead by the midway mark, but the Saints weren't backing down. Back-to-back layups by junior Dimitri Rucker and freshman Ibrahim Kamara cut off the CNU run, before MU continued the trend after a Captain three pointer with six-straight points. Sophomore Brandon Rogers knocked in five of the points, while Rucker dropped in one from the free-throw line.
By the half, the Captains found the basket a few more times to take a 33-24 advantage to the locker room. However, junior Alex Danko put the Saints on the board first to open the second half with two free throws.
The second half played much into the favor of CNU, but the Saints chipped away at the deficit through the final five minutes. Unfortunately, they still came up short against the nationally-ranked opponent.
Rogers paced the Saint offense with 12 points, while Rucker added nine. MU made its way to the line for 26 free-throw attempts, registering 21 of them for 80.8-percent shooting.
The Saints will return home for another league tilt on Saturday, February 11, hosting York College of Pennsylvania for Senior Day. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
