Tieman Honored, Saints Face Southern Virginia in CAC First Round

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ARLINGTON, Va. - On a day when Marymount women's volleyball senior Christy Tieman was honored for playing in the final home match of her career, the play of three freshman helped lead the Saints as they split two matches against Southern Virginia and Lebanon Valley on Saturday at Verizon Sports Arena.

Marymount (14-13, 4-5 CAC) played two five-set matches, opening the day with a tough CAC loss to Southern Virginia, 21-25, 25-17, 25-10, 23-25, 15-12.

The loss helped determine the final seedings for the 2017 CAC Volleyball Championship which starts on Tuesday and was a prelude to the first round in which the sixth-seeded Saints and third-seeded Knights will meet for the second time in four days.

Freshman Mykael Johnson had a team-high 11 kills against Southern Virginia while freshman Maggie Viniard had 34 assists and 16 digs. Junior Ashton Walker added 10 kills, seven digs and four block assists while posting a .444 hitting percentage.

The Saints jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first set and stretched it to as many as nine before a 9-0 run by the Knights tied it at 20-20. However, Marymount scored five of the final six points to hold on for the win.

Southern Virginia (20-7, 7-2 CAC) rallied to take the next two sets before the two teams found themselves tied at 20-20 again in the fourth. Thanks to back-to-back kills from Johnson and an attack error by the Knights, the Saints surged ahead 23-20 before evening the match on a kill by Walker.

The fifth and deciding set was back and forth, featuring seven ties, the last of which came at 11-11. However, three Southern Virginia kills over the final four points gave the visitors the victory.

Junior Caroline Hanson totaled nine kills and digs while sophomore Theresa Buscemi had 19 digs and freshman Jasmine Roy added 10.

After a heartbreaking conference loss, Marymount bounced back with a win against Lebanon Valley (16-13) in another five-set battle, 30-28, 13-25, 25-10, 21-25, 15-9. The match had a wierd rhythm to it. After a tightly contest first set, the next two featured large margin victories for each team.

The Saints took a 15-point win in the third, but couldn't close out the match in the fourth despite totaling 17 kills as the Dutchmen had 16 of their own while commiting just one error in 39 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage.

Marymount jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the deciding fifth set and after Lebanon Valley cut its deficit to one, the Saints closed the match with a 9-4 run.

Johnson totaled 21 kills on 49 attempts, both career-highs, while freshman Alexa Marcum had a career-high 17 kills on 45 attempts, just one shy of her career high. The duo combined for 38 kills, 94 attempts and a .277 hitting percentage.

For the third time in the last four days, Viniard set a new career high in assists as she finished with 48 against the Dutchmen while adding another 16 digs. Junior Emily Abramaitys added eight kills and six digs.

Marymount will travel to Southern Virginia on Tuesday for the first round of the 2017 CAC Volleyball Championship. Live stats and live video for the match will be available on www.MarymountSaints.com.
