Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. — The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team downed Gallaudet University in four sets Wednesday night, 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 25-12), as it moved to 4-2 for the season.
Senior Emileigh Rettig led the Saints on offense, registering a match-high 15 kills, while senior Cailyn Thomas and junior Margaret McAlpin each added 11 and 10, respectively. Junior Christine Tieman and sophomore Caroline Hanson coordinated the offense, each notching over 20 assists. Hanson also picked up a match-high 15 digs to pace the Saints on defense.
Thomas started things off on a kill to take a 1-0 lead in set one. Moments later, the Saints pieced together a 3-0 run to take a five-point advantage over the Bison. Near the end of the set, the Bison fought back into the match to take a 21-20 lead, forcing a timeout by the Saints. MU rallied at the end of the set to finish on top, 25-23.
Tieman found teammate McAlpin to open set two with a kill. Rettig and Thomas each added a kill, in addition to an ace by sophomore Ashton Walker, to form a 3-0 run and force a Bison timeout early in the set. MU remained on top throughout the rest of the set, reaching its biggest lead at 24-15. The set ended on a Bison error, giving the Saints a 2-0 advantage heading into the third set.
In set three, the Bison came out swinging to take the first point of the set. The momentum shifted back-and-forth in a point-for-point battle, seeing the set put up eight ties and five lead changes before the Bison were able to finish ahead, 25-22, to send the match into a fifth set.
The Saints bounced back convincingly in set four, taking a 4-1 lead right off the bat. Marymount took advantage of several Gallaudet errors and added three kills of its own to achieve a seven-point advantage early on. The Bison attempted to slow the Saints' momentum by taking a timeout after falling behind 13-6, but Rettig left the timeout and added another kill on the night. MU continued to dominate and took set four, 25-12.
The women will head to Allentown, Pennsylvania for the two-day Muhlenberg Buttermaker Tournament starting on Friday, September 9. The Saints will square off with Cabrinia College at 5 p.m., before capping off day one against host Muhlenberg College at 7 p.m.
