ALLENTOWN, Pa.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball squad traveled up to the Muhlenberg Buttermaker Tournament over the weekend, splitting its four matches to move its overall record to 6-4 for the season.

On Friday evening, the Saints coasted past Cabrini University to open the tournament, 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-19), before falling to host Muhlenberg University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-20). On Saturday, they split again, dropping a match to DeSales University, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22), and battling out at five-set victory over the University of Scranton, 3-2 (16-25, 25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 15-7).

Marymount vs. Cabrini

In a rather dominating performance to open the tournament, the Saints cruised past Cabrini in straight sets led by senior Emileigh Rettig who posted game highs in kills and digs with 13 and 17, respectively. Junior Christine Tieman and sophomore Caroline Hanson split the assists for the match with 20 and 19, in that order, while the defensive front at the net was secured by senior Cailyn Thomas with two block assists.

Marymount vs. Muhlenberg

In a close three-set battle, the Saints offense was paced by Thomas, putting away nine kills.

Leading the Saints in assists was Hanson, who notched 18 throughout the match, while Rettig picked up 12 digs followed by freshman Theresa Buscemi with 10 to lead Marymount's defense.

The three sets went point-for-point for a majority of the time, unfortunately the Mules were able to outlast the Saints by a few points in each set to take the match.

Marymount vs. DeSales

Similar to the Muhlenberg match, the Saints put up a fight against DeSales every step of the way, dropping each set by just three points. Impressive offensive numbers were put up by Rettig and Thomas with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Furthermore, Thomas showed off her accuracy in the match by registering a .438 kill percentage on her 16 total attempts.

Rettig paced the defense with a match-high 20 digs, while Buscemi dove out for 13. Three solo blocks were awarded in the match, seeing Thomas, Hanson and sophomore Emily Abramaitys earn one apiece.

Marymount vs. Scranton

The Scranton matchup played out to be the biggest battle of the weekend with MU taking it in the fifth set. The Royals came out strong in set one to take a 25-16 decision, but the Saints rallied quickly to snag the next two sets in a big momentum swing. A fourth set that played closely throughout saw Scranton take the two-point victory to push a deciding game, which the Saints polished off the match win on a 15-7 performance.

The dominating fifth set had the Saints post an impressive .571 kill percentage, putting down nine kills on the 15 total points. For the match, three Saints posted double figures in kills paced by Rettig with 16, while junior Margaret McAlpin and Hanson came in close behind with 15 and 10, respectively.

Hanson also registered a match-high 33 assists, and Tieman added 23 in the effort. Buscemi as the libero led the defense with 19 digs, while Thomas and sophomore Ashton Walker guarded the net for a block solo and two block assists apiece.

For an all-around great weekend on the court, Rettig earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

The women return home for their next match, welcoming Washington (Md.) College to the Verizon Sports Arena on Wednesday, September 14. Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
