Saints slip to Sea Gulls

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team battled against Salisbury University in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night, slipping in the closing 10 minutes of regulation for a 73-59 decision.

Although the Sea Gulls started off with the first three points of the game, the Saints were quick to come back, answering with six points, four of which came from senior Rick Narcisse. The Sea Gulls answered back with a 7-0 run, until Marymount called a timeout in hopes of changing the momentum. This tactic worked, as coming out off the timeout sophomore D'Ondre Stockman sank back-to-back buckets from outside the arc. The Saints took their own 10-0 run to reclaim the lead, 16-11 before SU hit another run to draw the score up at 16-16.

Both teams traded two points before MU took another lead following a three from senior Danny Ferry and four more points from Narcisse to put the Saints up 23-20. The Sea Gulls tried to come back after notching four points of their own, but junior Pat Dumais and senior Colin Burkhart both put in layups to keep the lead in favor of MU.

Right before the half, the Saints got the momentum they were looking for to take to the locker room. Junior Michael Anderson pulled up for a three-pointer with just three seconds remaining, rimming out on the attempt. With time ticking down, Stockman pulled down the offensive rebound and quickly went up-and-under to release the layup before the buzzer to send the blue and white into the break with a 38-31 advantage and an erupted gym of cheering.

The second half started up a defensive battle, only seeing seven combined points scored in the first five minutes, five in favor of the Sea Gulls. A 12-1 run by Salisbury put it ahead 51-45 by the 9:51 mark before Narcisse cut the momentum off a dish by sophomore Alex Danko for the finish inside. The Saints and Sea Gulls battled back and forth, but the Sea Gulls took up a seven-point lead with 7:02 remaining in regulation.

Stockman and Burkhart cut the deficit to three, 56-53, but Salisbury maintained the lead through to the final whistle.

Three Saints put up double-digit points led by Stockman led the offense with a team-high 18 points. Narcisse dropped in 13 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor, while Burkhart added 12 points off 4-for-6 shooting. The Saints outrebounded the Sea Gulls, 33-32, seeing 10 different Saints hit the boards. Burkhart and Narcisse grabbed six and five, respectively, to lead the defense.

The Saints head on the road to face CAC-opponent Christopher Newport University on Saturday, February 20 for their final regular-season game. Tipoff is set for 4 pm.
