Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team came up short in a Capital Athletic Conference rivalry matchup on Saturday afternoon on the road at the University of Mary Washington, 61-58.
In a game that saw 10 ties and eight lead changes, it was a battle up until the final few seconds. Late in the second half, senior Danny Ferry knocked in his game-high fourth three-pointer of the game to break the draw and give the Saints a 52-49 lead with 5:40 remaining.
Marymount held onto that advantage for the next minute or so, seeing Ferry drop in two free throws, but over the closing five minutes, the Eagles opened up an 11-4 run to finish out the game for the 61-58 decision. Six-straight points by UMW gave it back the lead by the 3:07 mark but junior Pat Dumais caught a dish from senior Colin Burkhart for the quick finish inside to knot the score back up at 56-56.
Eagles' Eric Shaw, who finished with 12 points for the game, answered with back-to-back buckets to put Mary Washington up four, enough to hold off the Saints with less than a minute remaining.
Junior Michael Anderson gave MU one last opportunity when he cut the deficit to two off two free throws with 20 seconds left. Coming out a timeout, Anderson quickly fouled to send Eagles' Matt Forrest to the line who hit the back end of two free throws to give UMW a three-point lead. With less than 20 seconds remaining, the Saints were unable to get off a shot as the game came to a close.
Through the first half of play, the Saints grabbed a 37-36 advantage to take to the locker room behind Ferry's eight points. Sophomore Alex Danko commanded the paint through the 20-minute stretch with nine rebound and a block to add to his four points.
For the game, Ferry registered a game-high 16 points off 50 percent shooting, while sophomore D'Ondre Stockman added a double-digit game with 10 points.
The men head back to Arlington for their final regular-season home game on Wednesday, February 17, as they take on Salisbury University in a conference tilt. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
