Saints' defense holds strong in fourth-straight victory

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team held St. Mary's College of Maryland to just 10 second-half points, as it cruised to a 52-30 victory on Monday night in Capital Athletic Conference play. With the win, the Saints move to 16-3 for the season, 11-1 in the CAC.

The scoring was spread out among nine Saints in the contest led by freshman Tyffani McQueen and junior Kiki Laux with 10 points apiece. The more impressive statistic of the game was Marymount holding the Seahawks to 29.3-percent shooting from the floor (12-for-41), while forcing 23 turnovers, 15 of which were steals.

The first half played out as a close one between the squads with Marymount taking a four-point advantage into the locker room, 24-20. Through the first quarter, the lead swayed four times but the Saints carried the lead following the first 10 minutes after a strong finish at the rim by senior Kievanna Lacey as the clock hit zero.

The second quarter opened up with a great defensive series, as the Seahawks drove the lane looking for the early layup, but sophomore Leah Hurst wasn't giving up the basket, swatting the attempt off the shooter and out of bounds to switch up the possession. It would transition into a successful trip the other way, seeing McQueen cash in on a three pointer to push the Saints' lead to 15-9.

The Seahawks slowly chipped away at their deficit over the next eight minutes, eventually retaking the lead with two minutes remaining until the half, 20-19. But the Saints weren't slowing down, answering back with five-unanswered points to close out the first half, including an and-one finish by sophomore Nicole Viscuso and a steal by Laux which transitioned into a layup by the junior on the other end.

Taking a 24-20 advantage into the second half, Marymount jumped on St. Mary's early with a strong finish by senior Miranda Krott and a steal into a breakaway layup by Lacey for a quick four points to open up the 10-minute quarter. There was no looking back after the quick start, as the Saints hit their double-digit lead by the 4:43 mark of the third quarter off a layup by Viscuso.

Continuing to spread out the advantage, the final 10 minutes opened up with the 20-point lead off another Viscuso lay in. The lead would push to as much as 23 points for the Saints, at two different times. With 4:28 remaining, McQueen knocked in a jumper to make the score 49-26, and with 2:05 remaining when freshman Tierney Goetz took the court for the first time following an injury that kept her sidelined for 13 games, hitting a long ball to move the score to 52-29.

Viscuso and Hurst paced a strong defensive effort for the game. Viscuso finished with 12 rebounds and two steals to go with seven points, while Hurst matched a career best with a game-high six steals.

Holding St. Mary's to just 30 points for the game, Marymount is now holding opponents to just 45.7 points per game, good enough to move the Saints into fourth best in the country and the top team in the CAC.

The women are back in action on Wednesday, February 3, as they continue their four-game home stand. The Saints will welcome Southern Virginia University to the Verizon Sports Arena for another conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
