Box Score ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team remains unbeaten in Capital Athletic Conference play after battling past York College of Pennsylvania in four sets, 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 26-24, 25-23).
The Saints got off to an early jump, taking a 9-3 lead forcing the Spartans to take their first timeout of the match. York inched its way back into the set to get within four of the Saints, but that's as close as it would get as MU finished the set on top, 25-21.
York pulled ahead early in set two before Head Coach Beth Ann Wilson called a timeout after falling behind, 14-9. The Spartans continued to attack and took set two, 25-16, to even up the set count.
Set three resulted in an intense battle between both squads with York being forced to take the first timeout after trailing by four. The Saints were forced to burn a timeout later in the set as well after York pulled ahead 19-17, which proved to be effective as the Saints pieced together a 4-0 run following the timeout. YCP used its last timeout but was unable to slow down the Saints who prevailed in extra points, 26-24.
The Saints carried the momentum into set four, gaining a four-point advantage early on. The Spartans battled back but the Saints offense proved to be too much. York took a timeout after falling behind, 15-11, but Marymount maintained its lead before forcing another York timeout at 22-18. Sophomore Caroline Hanson fed junior Margaret McAlpin one last time to win the set and match, 25-23.
On offense, the Saints were well-rounded, seeing kills from nine different Saints led by senior Emileigh Rettig with 13. Junior Christine Tieman and Hanson worked together to add 18 assists apiece for the Saints. On the defensive end, freshman libero Theresa Buscemi registered 17 digs and sophomore Ashton Walker put up a wall at the net, registering 10 block assists.
The women will head on the road to face off against CAC opponent Wesley College in Dover, Delaware on Wednesday, October 12. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
