Ngoh scores game winner in overtime to sink Royals, 2-1

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Rodney Ngoh knocked in the game-winning finish in just over six minutes into overtime to shoot the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team past Eastern Mennonite University, 2-1, and into the win column to close out the UMW Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides of the field came up big for the Saints (1-2) in extra time, as senior goalkeeper Logan Cropper became an impenetrable wall in the net. Opening up overtime, Royals' Dominic Powers put Cropper to work with back-to-back rips within five second of one another, both of which Cropper turned away to keep the game alive.

It wasn't more than three minutes after those two saves by the senior that he got tested again, this time from Royals' David Nester. But Cropper held strong on the defensive end to hold the score at 1-1.

With the ball transitioning, Marymount earned a corner kick in the 96th minute. Freshman Andre Ferguson sent the attempt where it found the foot of senior Carlos Sanchez, who quickly moved the ball to Ngoh for the shot and finish. The game-winning goal is Ngoh's first of his collegiate career.

The game began with shots firing early, and the Saints capitalizing first. Junior Ahmed El-manialawy had the first opportunity, but quick hands by Royals' goalkeeper Matthew Overacker turned it away. But his hands weren't quick enough for the next shot taken by freshman Brandon Orozco who sent one past the keeper to take the 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. The goal is Orozco's first of his collegiate career.

By the 39th minute, Eastern Mennonite (1-2) would draw the score even, 1-1, a score that would hold until Ngoh's game-winning finish in overtime. The second half saw two more saves by Cropper, who finished the game with six through 96 minutes tending the cage.

The Saints will now head back home for a mid-week matchup against Randolph-Macon College at Long Bridge Park on Wednesday, September 9. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
