Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team stayed hot into the final day of the Rowan Tournament Saturday, tallying two more victories to go undefeated for the two-day event. The Saints were the only team of the eight in attendance to win all four of their matches.
The first match of the day, the Saints downed the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-11), before cruising past the University of Michigan-Dearborn, 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-13).
Marymount vs. Mount Saint Vincent
The Saints put together an all-around team effort in the first match of the day, paced by freshman Caroline Hanson and junior Emileigh Rettig. Hanson set a career and match high in assists with 31, while Rettig led the Saints in kills with 11 and posted a match-high in digs with 19. Junior Mallory Mitchell also put together a solid first match as the only other player with Rettig to reach double figures in kills with 10, along with nine digs.
The first set was a slow start with Marymount dropping the first eight points before a kill by sophomore Christine Tieman put the Saints on the board. Trying to overcome the deficit throughout the set, the Dolphins maintained the lead to take the first set, 25-16.
Similar to the first set, the second started out in favor of the Dolphins, but the Saints fought back to keep the game close until 10-10. A service ace by Mitchell and a kill by Rettig moved Marymount ahead and built a momentum to push it to a 25-18 victory.
That momentum carried over into the final two sets, seeing the Saints take commanding leads in the third and fourth to take the match, 3-1.
Marymount vs. Michigan-Dearborn
Like the first match of the day against Mount Saint Vincent, the Saints (4-1) fell behind in the early part of the first set against the Wolverines after a six-point stretch. Marymount would get as close as a one-point deficit three times off three separate kills by Hanson, Rettig and senior Morgan McAlpin, but Dearborn held on for the first set victory, 25-17.
A fire was lit in the Saints to open the second set, pushing the lead to 11-4 following back-to-back kills by Rettig. A four-point advantage by the Wolverines helped inch them back into the set, eventually taking over the lead at 23-21. Marymount didn't back down, scoring the next four points off a service error and two attack errors by the Wolverines and a kill by junior Hannah Steger to take the set 25-23.
The third set remained close until the Saints took a 6-5 advantage, a lead they wouldn't surrender for the remainder of the game. MU put the final touches on the third set with the final five points including a kill apiece by McAlpin and Hanson and a service ace by McAlpin.
The fourth set was all Saints, jumping out to a 5-0 lead to open it up. In the stretch, Mitchell blasted two kills, while McAlpin put one down as well. The set and match were capped off by three kills and an ace for the Saints, seeing kills handed out by Hanson, Rettig and junior Cailyn Thomas and the ace by Hanson.
McAlpin, Rettig and Mitchell all reached double digits in kills for the match with 14, 13 and 11, respectively. Sophomore Ashley Cabrera and Hanson led the Saints in the assist category with 28 and 21, in that order, while Rettig put up another match high in digs with 15. Mitchell (10) and senior Courtney Phung (11) recorded double figures in digs as well.
The women will now take a one-match break from tournament play to take on Washington (Md.) College on Wednesday, September 9. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m., in Chestertown, Maryland.
