Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team hit the road for its first tournament of the season on Saturday, traveling to the UMW Soccer Classic. The Saints opened up with Hood College, falling 2-1.
Marymount (0-2) fell behind early in the game, as the Blazers (2-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Trying to slow down the Hood offense, senior goalkeeper Logan Cropper still managed to pull in six saves, but the constant attack capitalized on one more before the half to grab a 2-0 lead over the Saints through the first 45 minutes.
Making adjustments at the break, MU came out a different team. Allowing 11 shots from the Blazers in the first half, the Saints' defense tightened up in the final 45 minutes, only allowing four attempts. On the offensive end, Marymount continued the offensive pressure, sending off six shots in the half and finding the back of the net on one.
Just seven minutes into the restart, junior Max Milone received a pass from freshman John-Paul Orozco and placed it past Hood goalkeeper Joe Centeno to draw the Saints within one, 2-1. With time winding down, MU was unable to get another one past Centeno, including a couple late attempts by junior Ahmed El-manialawy.
The Saints will take the turf again on Sunday for day two of the tournament, as they take on Eastern Mennonite University. First touch is set for 3:30 p.m.
