GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team opened up the first day of the Rowan Tournament without dropping a single set through two matches. 

The Saints led off with a victory over host Rowan University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-15), and followed it up with another straight-set win against Immaculata University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-19).

Senior Courtney Phung, junior Emileigh Rettig and freshman Caroline Hanson all had great performances to lead the Saints past the Profs. Phung contributed a team-high 13 digs, while Hanson added a match-high 13 assists. Rettig, for the second-straight match, powered through with a match-high 11 kills, the only player between the two squads to reach double digits. 

The first set remained close throughout, with the largest spread being four at 9-5 following two service aces by Rettig, a kill by sophomore Margaret McAlpin and a ball-handling error by Rowan. 

Trading the lead several times, Marymount took over after a draw at 16-16 to pull away for a 25-20 victory in the first set. Junior Cailyn Thomas capped off the set with a kill off a Phung assist. 

The second set saw the Saints battling back after a slow start, going down 3-0 to open up. The women eventually grabbed the lead following two-straight kills by Margaret at 11-9 and never looked back, cruising to a 25-16 win. The final two MU points came from back-to-back block assists teamed up by Hanson and senior Morgan McAlpin. 

The Saints carried the momentum into the third set that they commanded from the start. Keeping a healthy distance throughout, a kill by Rettig put the final touch on the match to seal up the sweep with a 25-15 third-set victory. 

Marymount vs. Immaculata

The women didn't leave up in their second match of the day when they took on the Mighty Macs, led by Morgan and sophomore Christine Tieman. Morgan, like Rettig in the first match of the day, was the only player on the court to reach double digits in kills with a match-high 13. Tieman also had a match high in assists, sending out 15 helpers. Hanson mirrored her first match total in assists with 13. 

In the first set, the squads remained close but the Saints only gave up the lead once. Down 9-8 to Immaculata, Marymount went on a four-point run to take the advantage and cruise to a victory in the first set. A block assist by Morgan and junior Hannah Steger started the stretch. 

Like the first set, the second remained close for the opening points, but the Saints didn't falter. MU grabbed the lead at 8-7 and never looked back, coasting to a 25-15 win in the second set. 

A strong second set led to a great start to the third. Although the Mighty Macs claimed the opening point, the Saints answered with six-straight points, led by two kills apiece by Morgan and junior Mallory Mitchell, to take the lead and never surrender it for the remainder of the match. Thomas put the final touch on the match with a kill to cap off a 25-19 set. 

The Saints are back at it again on Saturday to finish off the Rowan Tournament with two more matches. The day will open up with the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 12 p.m., followed by the University of Michigan-Dearborn at 2 p.m.
