Marymount tops Gettysburg in four-set thriller

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va.—After returning home to the Verizon Sports Arena for its first home match since its season opener, the Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team defeated Gettysburg College on Wednesday night, 3-1 (26-28, 25-22, 26-24, 25-20), to move to 11-4 on the season.

Junior Emileigh Rettig set the tone on offense with a match high of 17 kills, followed by junior Mallory Mitchell who added 14 for the Saints. Freshman Caroline Hanson and sophomore Christine Tieman led the team in assists with 29 and 22, respectively.  On the defensive end, senior Courtney Phung and Mitchell grabbed 22 digs apiece.

Gettysburg jumped to a 1-0 lead to start the first set but continued to trade points with Marymount until it went on a 4-0 run to extend its lead to 13-8. The Saints would fight back to tie it at 21 after a 4-0 run of their own. The teams would continue battling back-and-forth until the Bullets pulled out the win in extra points, 28-26.

Gettysburg's Joosje Grevers came out swinging with 3 kills early to put the Bullets up 7-2 in the second game. However, Marymount would turn it around and take the lead at 10-9 after three-straight kills from Rettig and back-to-back kills by Hanson. The Saints continued to build their lead and finish the second set with a kill by sophomore Margaret McAlpin.

Marymount would strike first in set three for the 1-0 lead on a kill by Margaret. The score would be tied several times before the Saints had a 7-0 run. Senior Morgan McAlpin and Rettig, who combined for four kills, led the run. That run would be enough to hold the lead until Gettysburg fought back to tie the game at 24 after a 7-0 run itself. A kill from Rettig and an ace would finish set three in favor of the Saints.

Three kills by Mitchell put the Saints up 3-0 to start the fourth set. The Bullets battled back to take a 4-3 lead before the two teams went back-and-forth most of the game. Mitchell finished with seven kills before the set ended on an attack error by Gettysburg's Lauren Godshalk to solidify the 3-1 victory for the Saints.

Gettysburg's Lauren Bergin led her team in kills with 12, and Stephanie Blair had a match high of 35 assists and 28 digs.

The women will go back on the road this weekend for a tri-match at Shenandoah University on Saturday, September 26 before getting into Capital Athletic Conference play next week. The Saints will open up with Virginia Wesleyan College at 3 p.m., before facing off with the host Hornets at 5 p.m.
