Women's volleyball downs Bison in three-set sweep

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Continuing its play in the nation's capital, the Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team extended its dominance against Gallaudet University on Wednesday night, putting together a three-set sweep, 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-20), to move the Saints to 9-2 for the season.

For the match, junior Cailyn Thomas, who just earned a spot on the all-tournament team this past weekend in the CUA Guetle Invitational, led the attack with a match-high eight kills. Sophomore Ashley Cabrera also led the team in assists with 18, while senior Courtney Phung recorded a match-high 14 digs to pace the defense.

The first match played out to be a close one, as the advantage swayed seven times. Late in the set, the Saints maintained a three-point lead at 23-20, but the Bison didn't go away, scoring three-straight points of their own to draw it even at 23-23. MU answered in fashion with the final two points to claim the opening game with a kill by freshman Caroline Hanson and a block assist by Thomas and sophomore Margaret McAlpin

The Saints carried that momentum into a second set that was all Marymount, taking it 25-13. The women opened the game with the first two points off a Thomas kill and another block assist, this time by senior Morgan McAlpin and Hanson, to take a lead that they wouldn't surrender throughout. Although Gallaudet remained close to the middle part of the set, a nine-point stretch for the Saints put the game away for the 2-0 lead.

The third set saw a familiar play out of MU, seeing the first three points go in favor of the Saints and holding that advantage for the remainder of the match. Cabrera and Morgan hooked up for the final kill and point to end the set, 25-20, to solidify the three-set victory.

The women will continue their road trip to Meadville, Pennsylvania this weekend for three matches in a two-day stretch. The Saints will open with Allegheny College on Friday, September 18 at 6 p.m.
