Saints continue winning streak with 2-0 victory over Hornets

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. – After claiming the MU Invitational in Fayetteville, North Carolina over the weekend with two victories, the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team continued that streak into Wednesday's match against Shenandoah University, recording its second-straight shutout, 2-0.

The victory is the program's third in a row, the first time the Saints have pulled that feat since 2010. In that stretch, MU also recorded two blank sheets with a 2-0 victory over Bridgewater (Va.) College and 3-0 decision against Lancaster Bible College.

Senior goalkeeper Logan Cropper put together another solid performance in the net for the Saints, including two big saves to keep the Hornets off the scoreboard in the first half in the 16th and 26th minute.

MU also had its opportunity in the first half to get on the board, seeing a shot fired on target by junior Ahmed El-manialawy just get pulled in by Shenandoah goalkeeper Matthew Poell.

Taking a scoreless match into the break, Cropper opened up the final 45 minutes with his third save in the opening two minutes of the restart. Continuing to see the pressure from the Hornets, the defense played a big role in relief of Cropper several minutes later with a defensive save on the goal line by freshman Rodney Ngoh

The draw would be broken in the final eight minutes, as freshman Marc Mendoza put in the game winner for his first collegiate goal. Sending in the ball for Mendoza's finish was El-manialawy for his first assist of his collegiate career, as well.

The Saints weren't done yet, tacking on a second one just three minutes later. Freshman Brandon Orozco connected with recent freshman addition Mynor Lopez for the finish past Poell in the 86th minute to put the final touch on the match. The goal and the assist were both firsts for the freshmen.

For the game, Marymount fired eight shots with three on target.

Cropper finished the match with six saves to earn his fourth win in net for the season. The senior now maintains a 1.12 goals-against average with 34 saves and two shutouts.

The men will look to continue their winning streak next Wednesday, September 23 on the road at Gettysburg College. First touch is set for 7 p.m., on Clark Field.
