Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount men's basketball team dropped a narrow decision to visiting Mary Washington on Tuesday night, dropping the quarterfinal matchup, 63-61, and thus being ousted from the CAC tournament.
The Eagles have now downed the Saints in two of their three meetings this year. Marymount falls to 19-7 on the season with the loss.
JC Hoellich notched yet another double-double in the effort, collecting 18 points and ten rebounds in route to his 11th of the season. Antonio Rouse and D'Ondre Stockman rounded out the Saints' offense with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Marymount narrowly outshot UMW, posting a 48.1% (26-for-54) performance to the Eagles' 46.2% (24-for-52) effort from the floor. The difference came largely from three-point land, where Mary Washington registered a stellar 52.9% (9-for-17) outing.
While the Saints overpowered the Eagles in the opening frame, it was the second half that saw the visitors take control.
Marymount used a 13-3 run to snatch an early – and rather spacious – advantage. Several threes and a pair of layups from Hoellich paced the Saints over a five-minute span, leading to an 11-point gap, 29-18, with 6:52 left to play in the first.
The Saints further extended that lead to 12 points moments later, 33-21, but UMW did not go quietly into the break. The Eagles rallied for five unanswered points to shave the deficit to a mere five points, 35-30.
The teams traded baskets to kick off the second frame, though it was not long before the visitors turned the tables.
Six unanswered points from UMW saw the score knotted at 41-41 with 12:01 remaining. Three minutes later, the Eagles found themselves up by one, 46-45.
The squads tussled vehemently for a sustainable advantage, but the margin proved stubborn and impossible to widen. Unfortunately, the Saints never saw the lead again.
Marymount battled within one on multiple occasions. Rouse fired a triple with 2:12 left on the clock to cut the gap to 62-61, but Marymount would have no further retort. A single tally from the charity stripe gave UMW the 63-61 win.
