Lacey drops 28 points; Saints battle to road win over Yellow Jackets

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Kievanna Lacey led the charge on Tuesday afternoon on the road with a game-high 28 points, as the Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team notched victory number two with a 91-80 decision over Randolph-Macon College.

Lacey came up just short of her career high in a single game in scoring, registering 29 points last season at Christopher Newport University on February 14. Lacey was joined by three other Saints in double figures, as sophomores Leah Hurst and Nicole Viscuso dropped in 18 and 11, respectively, and junior Kiki Laux added 15.

Marymount (2-0) grabbed the first basket of the night off a jumper by Laux and never faltered the advantage throughout the first 10 minutes, although it remained close until the buzzer. A 6-2 run in the closing three minutes of the first quarter, off a long ball by Hurst and a free throw and layup by senior Miranda Krott, guided the Saints to an 18-14 lead into the first break.

The second quarter was all about the runs, as both teams went on their respective stretches, starting with a 10-point run by MU at the eight-minute mark. Although the second quarter started out in favor of the Yellow Jackets (2-1) grabbing their first lead of the game, 22-20, at the 8:06 mark, but that's when the Saints tacked on 10 straight kicked off by five-consecutive points by Lacey. With a 30-22 advantage in favor of MU, Randolph-Macon turned it on for its stretch, going on a nine-point run to reclaim the lead 31-30. It was back and forth until the final minute of the first half, but a smaller run, this time six points off two baskets by Laux and a finish by Viscuso, gave the Saints a 41-39 lead at the half.

The second half remained close for a majority of the time, but Marymount never surrendered the lead again. The advantage quickly spread with less than seven minutes left in the game, as another run was started off by freshman Tierney Goetz, who dropped in her first collegiate three-pointer to give the Saints a 72-68 lead. Another long ball was added several seconds later by Hurst and followed by a Lacey layup to push it to a nine-point spread.

The advantage would continue to spread to double digits, eventually hold for an 11-point victory, 91-80.

As a team, Marymount shot 53.1 percent from the field, along with an impressive 72.7 percent from behind the arc. Hurst dropped in four long balls for the game to go along with her game-high seven assists, while Goetz notched two three-pointers and dished out four helpers.

On the defensive end, the Saints forced 20 Yellow Jacket turnovers while totaling 10 steals. Hurst and Viscuso both registered four for the game.

The women will now gear up for the Pablo Coto Tournament on their home court starting on Friday, November 20. The Saints will open with Brooklyn College at 7:30 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
