Box Score Arlington, Va. – An early goal and consistent pressure downed the Saints on Saturday afternoon, as visiting rival Mary Washington reeled in the 3-1 decision at Long Bridge Park. Marymount falls to 1-7-1 on the season and 0-1 in CAC action with the loss.
The Eagles wasted little time getting on the board as Jessica Bednarick used clean dribbling and a breakaway up the middle to attain the 1-0 advantage in just the 9th minute of play.
Saints leading-scorer Chloe McAuliffe inked the equalizer in the 22nd minute, working incredibly hard and beating the UMW defender to notch her fifth goal of this 2014 campaign.
Unfortunately, the score would not remain knotted for long, as the Eagles poured in the eventual game-winner just 39 short seconds later. Leah Roth used a crafty pass across the box to find teammate Taylor Decker for the finish and the goal.
Mary Washington added an insurance tally in the 36th minute as Anna Manser followed a similar route to Bednarcik – battling through the Saints backline for an unassisted strike.
The 3-1 deficit plagued Marymount for the rest of the first half – and then the rest of the match. The Blue and White constructed several threatening advances, but failed to find the target when all was said and done.
Holly Wenger takes the decision for the Saints, collecting eight saves and falling to 1-6 on the year.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to CAC foe Penn State Harrisburg for a midweek showdown. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
