Women's Volleyball Takes One at Worthington Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4

Washington, D.C. – Marymount University's women's volleyball team collected one victory over the two-day Worthington Classic this weekend, facing notable competition in each of its four matches.  The Saints now sit at 16-5 on the season.

Despite downing Messiah in its opening set of the tournament, Marymount could not prevent the Falcons from clawing their way back into the match.  The Saints poured in an admirable effort in both the third and fourth sets, losing by a mere two points in each.  However, when all was said and done, the Falcons finished off the Blue and White with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 28-26, 25-23) decision – Marymount's third loss of the year.

The nightcap proved an even taller task than the opener as the Saints took on a formidable foe in Hope – currently ranked #1 in the country through the NCAA polls.

The Flying Dutch took control of the match early and never relinquished it, downing Marymount in straight sets (25-10, 25-16, 25-19) to cap Friday's effort.  While Marymount dropped to 15-4 with the loss, Hope remained undefeated on the season, as it would throughout its weekend in Washington, D.C.

On Saturday, the Saints came out with a bone to pick and an incredible sense of urgency.  Marymount swept Rowan in straight sets (25-19, 25-13, 25-15) to start its day – an explosive performance after the previous day's setbacks.  The Blue and White improved to 16-4 with the win – inching ever-closer to that 20-win mark.

Unfortunately, the weekend's final match saw Marymount on the wrong side of a shutout.  The Saints pressured Olivet consistently throughout the contest, never dropping a set by more than four points.  Even so, the Comets proved insurmountable when the 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-21) decision was penned into the scorebooks.  The closing match brought the Marymount squad to its current 16-5 record.

Senior libero Cassidie Watson collected All-Tournament accolades after turning in consistently impressive performances for the Saints on the defensive side.  Specific statistics and box scores will be available shortly.

Marymount opens CAC play this Wednesday as it travels to Frostburg State.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
