Box Score 2 Aston, Pa. – Marymount University's women's
volleyball team came up empty-handed on Saturday, facing two very
tough opponents on the final day of the Neumann University
Invitational. The Saints fell in straight sets to a powerful
Richard Stockton squad before dropping their tournament finale to
#12 Eastern in similar fashion. Marymount slips to 11-2 on
the season with the losses, though its 11-match win streak to open
the 2014 campaign remains a program best.
Marymount's long day on the court started against a commanding
Richard Stockton offense. Despite a solid effort from the
Blue and White, the Ospreys swiped the opening two sets, eventually
clinching the match 3-0 (18-25, 14-25, 25-27) and handing the
Saints their first loss of the season.
Unfortunately for Marymount, the task at hand was not about to
get any easier. #12 Eastern stepped on to face the Saints in
their second tilt of the day, proving every bit the
nationally-ranked challenger. Despite a third-set rebuttal
from the Blue and White, the Eagles only needed those three quick
sets (19-25, 20-25, 22-25) to secure the match.
While All-Tournament accolades found sophomore Emileigh Rettig
for the third-straight weekend, several Saints poured in notable
performances at Neumann. Rettig led
the squad with 45 kills and 71 digs, while senior Cassidie
Watson turned in an impressive 79-dig effort. Morgan
McAlpin proved quite the netminder for the Saints, collecting
22 blocks – nine of which were solo.
Marymount returns to the Verizon Sports Arena on Wednesday night
as it hosts Hood in a nonconference bout. Match time is set
for 7 p.m.
