Men's Hoops Sweeps in Daytona

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Marymount men's hoops squad coasted past Maryville (Tenn.), 57-49, on Friday night before dropping Roanoke, 76-62, to cap its tournament efforts.  This is the second time the Saints have faced and defeated the Maroons this season, following their season opening 86-57 win in November.

With the two victories, Marymount's stellar season continues, as the Saints improve to a hearty 9-1 record on the year.

The weekend opener against the Scots proved smooth sailing for the Saints, with senior JC Hoellich registering 14 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.  Classmate Jesse Konadu and sophomore Michael Anderson each chipped in 13 points to round out the offense.

The first half proved a shot-for-shot affair.  The Saints held the lead for the majority of the frame, but never could extend the advantage beyond four points.  The Scots, always relevant over the first 20 minutes, sunk a jumper with just two seconds left to snatch an 18-17 lead to carry into the break.

The second half started quite similarly, but saw the Scots maintain a slight advantage, though the Saints were quietly building a 13-1 run to retake the lead.  Pat Dumais converted a layup at 14:39 to put Marymount back on top, 28-26, and the Blue and White would not trail again.

The Saints saw the Scots knot the score at 41 apiece, but, even as Maryville remained close, Marymount was able to put together a subtle 7-2 run to gain some distance and seal the deal.

The Saturday nightcap saw Roanoke and Marymount square off for the second time this season, though the storyline did not change much from the season opener a month ago.

Junior Danny Ferry led all scorers with 21 points off the bench, 15 of which came from his 5-for-10 effort from the beyond the arc.  Three other Saints chipped in double-digit showings, with Konadu adding 14, Anderson dropping 13, and Hoellich pouring in 11.

As a team, the Saints shot an impressive 47.6% from three-point land, compiling a 10-for-21 effort from beyond the arc.

The contest remained close, and, though the Saints led by as much as seven with 7:52 showing, the Maroons chipped away and completely erased the gap – swiping a 33-32 lead to tow into the break.

The second half saw Roanoke extend its advantage to six, though that deficit did nothing to daunt the Saints.  The Blue and White countered with a 15-2 run – capped by back-to-back triples from Ferry – to swipe the lead and more, posting a 51-44 advantage with 9:51 left to play.

Another Marymount run, this time a 13-3 rally, put the Saints well beyond reach, up 72-59 with under a minute remaining.  Three ensuing free throws from the Maroons mattered very little, especially when the Saints would not allow the foe another basket from the field.

Marymount returns to action in the new year, slated to kick-off a long stretch of league play with a CAC tilt at Mary Washington.  Tip time is slated for 3 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Va.
