Saints Cruise Past Arcadia, Set Program Win Record

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – After almost an hour delay, the Marymount University women's volleyball team made quick work of visiting Arcadia in the first round of the ECAC Southeast Region tournament.  Using the three-set sweep (25-5, 25-23, 25-21) to reach the 27-win mark, the 2014 Saints now hold the program record for most wins in a single season.

All-CAC first-teamer Morgan McAlpin paced the Marymount attack with a match-high 11 kills and two service aces on the night.

Fellow All-CAC performer Emileigh Rettig chipped in seven kills and ten digs to round out the Saints' attack.  Cassidie Watson proved the defensive staple with 14 digs in the effort.

The opening set certainly set the tone for the evening, as the Saints jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead.  Marymount went on numerous rallies to continually lengthen the advantage, only surrendering a mere five points to the Knights.

The second set proved a much closer affair, as the visitors dug in their heels and prepared for battle.  The squads battled point-for-point through the lengthy installment – knotting the score nine different times until the Saints finally found momentum enough to extend the lead to 21-16.

Arcadia fought back to close the deficit to 22-21, but kills from McAlpin and Emily Montgomery gave the Saints match point and the eventual set win.

The third set proved much of the same – a point-for-point dispute that saw the Blue and White work extremely hard to create some space.

The Saints held the 10-9 advantage before eventually fighting their way to a 17-10 lead.  While Arcadia would battle back, as it had in the previous set, Marymount ultimately proved insurmountable.

The Saints trailed only twice over the course of the match.

Marymount advances to the ECAC Semifinal Round on Saturday afternoon – set to square off against Swarthmore at Lebanon Valley.
