Box Score York, Pa. – Despite the scoreless stalemate that persisted throughout the opening half, the host Spartans came to life in the second frame to down the Saints 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Marymount to 2-9 on the year and 0-2 in CAC action.
The first half proved a chess match of sorts, with both squads moving pieces and making attacks to no avail. Though York held possession for those opening 45 minutes, the Spartans could not solve Marymount netminder Logan Cropper, who collected five saves before the break.
The second half, however, proved a much different story. It took the reenergized Spartan offense a mere 49 seconds to notch its first score of the half, as Patrick Ward crossed the ball to the left post, where Justin Kaiser finished with a flying header.
With the 1-0 advantage in tow, York continued to pressure the Saints backline. The 59th minute saw Ward send another cross into the box – this time from about 30 yards out – to find Greg Bechard, who finished with a beam into the upper right corner.
Now faced with a 2-0 deficit, the Blue and White moved the ball downfield much more consistently that second half, but the target still proved too evasive.
The Spartans topped off their offensive rally with a clean-cut triangular setup in the 68th minute. Benjamin Jacks played the ball in from the left to Chris Gillespie, who set up Brett LaBonte perfectly for York's final strike.
Impenetrable defense quieted the Saints resolve for comeback and carried the Spartans safely to the final whistle.
Marymount returns to Long Bridge Park on Wednesday to host CAC rival Wesley. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
