Second-Half Surge Sinks Saints in Finale

Box Score

Newport News, Va. – Despite swiping an early 1-0 lead in just the 13th minute, the Saints failed to faze an absolutely potent Christopher Newport offense on Wednesday night.  The Captains – having been shut out by an impermeable Marymount defense in the first half – sniped five unanswered goals in the final 45 minutes to down the Saints in the season finale.  Marymount caps its 2014 season at 3-15 overall and 1-8 in CAC action.

Marymount netminder Logan Cropper contributed an exceptional effort between the pipes, hauling in 15 saves amidst an almost-ceaseless Christopher Newport bombardment – most of which came in that five-goal second half.

The opening period saw a tireless Saints' attack pressure and crack the Christopher Newport backline within minutes.  Tristan Munoz dropped back to take a corner kick for Marymount and came away with the game's first tally in just the 13th minute.  Captains' keeper Nolan Mann put two hands on the strike, but the ball slipped right through almost completely unimpeded – nabbing the back corner of the net.

The Marymount backline then stepped up and played a remarkable first half to shut out a well-regarded Christopher Newport offense – allowing the Saints to enter the break with the 1-0 advantage in tow.

The closing period, however, proved an entirely different story.  The Captains rang in the second half with the equalizer – punched in by Alex Makumbi in just the 46th minute.

From there, Christopher Newport's momentum just seemed to compound, as possession never truly wavered in the Saints' favor.  The Captains eventually stole the lead at the 63:54 mark – good for the game-winner, courtesy of Sean Christein.

With a playoff berth on the line, however, the host sought to seal the deal.  The Captains went on to tally three insurance goals over the match's final 20 minutes, capping the day's effort at 5-1.
