Captains Sail Past Saints

Box Score

Newport News, Va. – The Marymount University women's soccer squad took on the CAC's top-ranked team on Saturday, falling to offensive powerhouse Christopher Newport in an oppressive 6-0 decision.  The Saints fall to 1-12-1 on the year and 0-6 in CAC action with the loss.

The six unmatched tallies began in just the second minute, and then proceeded to punctuate the match intermittently.  Victoria Perry dribbled through the heart of the defense, finishing on the left side to give the Captains the early 1-0 advantage at that 2:58 mark.

Kimmie Kerstiens followed Perry with another strike in the 14th minute, unleashing a shot from about eight yards out and extending the Christopher Newport lead to 2-0.

The two-goal deficit would plague the Saints for the duration of that first half, but the Captains' relentless offense would go on to triple its lead in the second frame.

Perry once again found herself in prime real estate in the 57th minute, as a corner kick gave her the chance to pour in her second goal of the day.

Kerstiens, like Perry, secured her second goal in the 65th minute, once again using point-blank distance to outmatch Marymount keeper Holly Wenger.  The five-yard chip-in provided Christopher Newport with more than enough insurance – upping the advantage to 4-0.

The Captains reeled in another goal in the 71st minute as Alexis Haycraft punched in her first strike of both the match and the season.  A well-placed cross found the head of Haycraft just five yards out – an easy put-back for the Christopher Newport forward.

The scoring was finally capped in the 88th minute when Joy Piirto blasted a ball from ten yards out, just beyond the reach of Wenger in net.

In a busy day between the pipes, Wenger collected an impressive 14 saves throughout the contest.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts CAC foe Southern Virginia at Long Bridge Park.  Match time is set for 4 p.m.
